Joel's mouth quirks into a smile at the text and he glances curiously in John's direction, watching the man for a moment. He knows very little about him, but he trusts Spencer's judgment more than he does most people and so he trusts that John is a good man. Probably better than many people in Siren Cove, given that he treats Spencer well and is clearly well liked and respected in turn. Sometimes he thinks he ought to make the effort to get to know the man better, but he's nervous about that for some reason. It feels a little like putting himself up for scrutiny and while he's not completely opposed to that -- Spencer should have someone to scrutinize him, he thinks, he should have someone to tell him whether or not Joel is worthy of his time -- it makes him feel a little sick to his stomach to think he might be found wanting.
"Oh," he says, realizing Spencer is asking him a question and he pauses, then smiles a little sheepishly. "There might be shepherd's pie cooling in my apartment right now." He'd made it with every intention of bringing some to Spencer for lunch, but it hadn't been cool enough to pack up by the time he'd left, so he had planned on asking Spencer to just come back with him to the store for lunch. If they have the afternoon off, however, they'll be able to eat upstairs at a real table before finding something else to do. Either outside the apartment or, preferably, in.
"And then there are fireworks on the boardwalk later," he continues, which he's sure Spencer is aware of. They happen every year and not just at the boardwalk, but the ones set off for the largest crowd are always the ones Joel has liked the best. "They're easy to see from the fire escape, I watch them from there every year, but I... I got an extra chair this year." It's nothing, it's just a low quality fold out beach chair he picked up from the store, bright green fabric wrapped around a cheap metal frame, but it matches the blue one he already has out on the fire escape for this very thing and he's never invited anyone out there with him before. The chairs are cheap, but comfortable and he's never wanted so badly to simply sit outside his window with someone as he does with Spencer.
