John as been accommodating of Spencer from the start, seeing something in him that Spencer's never been able to suss out, only that it had been more than the fact that he'd been Vera Waters' son. After his mother and brother had died, John had been the one to bail him out of jail before Levi had ultimately cleared his name. John had been the one to bring him into a hug when Spencer had been unable to hold back his tears after the funeral had ended; and he'd also known Spencer well enough to know that he would never need to bring it up again. He'd had expected nothing less than John's gruffly affectionate declaration that as long as Joel didn't steal Spencer away as an employee, he'd be happy for them both, and Spencer smiles to himself as he spares one last glance over his shoulder at his boss, at the closest thing to family Spencer's had in the last couple years, before setting his full attention back on Joel.
His eyes brighten at the mention of the shepherd's pie and he can't hide the pleased look on his face at the fact that Joel's cooked for him. He's rubbish at fitting in good meals on his own, he's never been a talent in the kitchen like his mother had been. Even Dane had been able to pull off some great dishes here and there but every time Spencer had given it a shot, the family had just ended up ordering pizza instead. He doesn't have a problem with that, he can accept that he's not a genius in the kitchen, and there's something about having a boyfriend who is that's awfully appealing.
He flushes out of pleased pleasure that Joel has brought up another chair to the fire escape, and he curls his fingers over Joel's hip and gives a quick squeeze before happily kissing his boyfriend on the cheek. He feels a bit giddy at the thought of having someone to watch the fireworks with, someone to kiss under the fireworks for the first time in his life, and he hopes that Joel won't say anything if he notices the sudden skip in Spencer's step. "Dinner and a show," he says, keeping his tone even though his smile is broad. "Watching the fireworks from the fire escape with you sounds highly superior than dealing with the crowd. Besides, I think I like the idea of celebrating our first holiday together like that. Together, just you and me."
