CHARACTER info

CHARACTER NAME: Spencer Waters, Jr.

CHARACTER AGE: 29

BACKGROUND & HISTORY: Spencer Waters was only six-years-old when his father was killed in a tragic car accident. Devastated, Vera Waters moved Spencer and his younger brother Dane to the small town of Siren Cove in an attempt to start over, to attempt to erase the memory of the pain caused by the loss of her husband. Vera took up a job at the town’s library while her sons attended school, hoping that it would prove to be enough of a distraction.

Spencer kept a low profile throughout his years at school, always feeling out of place with his eidetic memory and a strange sense of a displaced energy in the town that nobody else ever seemed to notice. His brother was a shining star, quickly becoming popular amongst their peers and teachers, and though Dane tried desperately to include him in the things he did, Spencer didn't often accept his brother's invitations. Even by the time he graduated from high school, home life usually consisted of joining his mother and brother for dinner before retreating back to his room or to his job at the library that he’d gotten thanks to Vera. The ocassional exceptions would be relenting to Dane's incessant begging to go out to the dock to row their boat out or the occasional family outing.

He did not attend college, opting instead to learn what he could from the books in the library and spending the rest of his time trying to understand what it was exactly that he could practically feel bubbling beneath what he could see on the surface of everything around him.

On the morning of his 27th birthday, Spencer awoke to find Vera's body drained of blood on the dock behind their home. Dane's body was found by a nearby fisherman not too long after that in the same manner. Arrested under suspicion and released upon lack of evidence, Spencer became somewhat of a town pariah thanks to the still unsolved murder that rocked Siren Cove. At 29, Spencer still works at the library, though most who have lived in the town long enough to recognize him usually don’t approach him. With the arrival of the curse on the town, Spencer works tirelessly to uncover the mystery shrouding Siren Cove and to uncover the truth about who really killed his mother and brother.

PERSONALITY: Spencer has always been awkward and a bit socially impaired, finding it difficult to make friends and communicate with others in a way that would be considered especially friendly. It has been proposed more than once by his teachers and counselors that he may have at least a mild form of Asperger's Syndrome; however, he has never been medically diagnosed and does not identify as such.

After the death of his mother and brother, Spencer became even more withdrawn. He rarely left the house left to him for more than going to work at the library or grocery shopping and though there a few people he would consider himself close to, he generally tries to keep a fair bit of distance between himself and others. This is partly because of his inability to express himself in ways that is widely accepted as 'normal' and his fear of losing someone else that he loves.

Spencer can often be seen muttering to himself and is thought by some to be in need of serious psychological help when in fact, he is highly functioning and those who have known him all his life would be quick to say that he’s a quiet but ultimately kind soul who wouldn’t hurt a fly, in spite of the fact that Spencer likely wouldn’t even thank most of them for their support. A conversation with him isn’t necessarily easy but he can keep one up if he needs to and in light of the more recent attacks, Spencer has been seen out and about around the town more and more, much to the dismay of many who still believe he’s guilty for killing Vera and Dane. He is making an active attempt to come out of the shell he’s been hiding in the past two years to figure out what’s happened in Siren Cove, now and on the day his family had been killed.

OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Spencer couldn’t care less about the Coombs and the Thortons. He’s read all about the rivalry in the library, of course, and is well-versed on the subject; but he doesn’t spare any more time thinking about it than he has to, namely when asked about it by a clueless library patron. ·

LIFESTYLE: Spencer inherited his two-story plus attic home upon his mother’s death, as well as the small fortune left to the family by his father. He wouldn’t be considered especially but he was left very well off for someone in his late twenties with a job at the town library. He lives alone and hasn’t changed much in the way of furniture, though he keeps everything very neat.

Spencer also keeps his liquor cabinet fairly well supplied with bottles of scotch and whiskey, and he has a short glass almost every evening before he goes to bed. The only part of the home that remains unused is the dock where Vera and Dane were killed. The grass remains green only from the rain but there are parts of the wooden dock that have rotted away while the rest is covered with moss.

HUMAN, WITCH, OR SIREN: Human who is sensitive to the supernatural element around him but can't quite explain it on his own.

PLAYED BY: Matthew Gray Gubler
